SRT

Why does SRT suit as a Standard Protocol for Data Transfer?

Secure, Stable Transmission

At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show 2019, Explorer intends to appeal the merits of the company’s 4K- and 2K-supported H.265/ HEVC codec system EHU3410E encoder and EHU3410D decoder, which support the new standard called the Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) protocol for image transfer.

The video transmission SRT technology enables optimal streaming quality over IP networks and is capable of high-performance, low-latency streaming using IP networks. This technology assures high confidentiality and stable transmission quality even on unstable transmission lines. Because this codec system incorporates the SRT protocol, it can perform secure and safe 4K video IP transmission for IP transmission lines.

At the Explorer booth, the company is going to conduct demonstrations of SRT protocol transmission using a 4K supported EHU3410E encoder and an EHU3410D decoder, which support the SRT protocol.

In 2018, Explorer developed the first-generation codec system EHU2400E encoder and EHU3400D decoder. In 2019, the company developed the second-generation codec system EHU3410E encoder and EHU3410D decoder. The second-generation codec system provides support for H.265/HEVC as well as H.264/AVC. The system uses the new standard SRT protocol (open protocol) for video transfer as its IP protocol, and also supports protocols such as Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), which can directly stream audio, video, and data in Cloud and YouTube, as well as a low-latency streaming mode.

For the video input signal, the system supports the Main 4:2:2 10 profile and 4K/60p. For the input interface, 12G-SDI with a transmission speed of 12Gbps is included as standard feature. The system is also capable of supporting High Dynamic Range (HDR) signals. Explorer provides total hardware and software solutions for video streaming as well as media management and video distribution.

Suits as Standard Protocol for Data Transfer

The SRT protocol is an open-source video transport technology developed by Haivision in Canada. This protocol can be used for wide-ranging applications since it provides functions for encrypting video data (Secure), restoring dropped packets (Reliable), and transferring of video data over a general-purpose IP network (Transport).

Deliver high-quality, low-latency video across the public internet

The SRT protocol is widely used for facilities such as transmission devices, Cloud-based streaming services, and IP transmission and streaming for software and Content Delivery Networks (CDN). It is highly expected that the SRT protocol may become a standard protocol for high-performance and high-quality data transfer.

Furthermore, the SRT protocol has support for delivery of metadata such as text information in addition to audio and video data. This protocol offers multiple functions that are required for network-related audio, video, and data transmission such as error recovery function, low-latency streaming, security function by encryption, and firewall pass-through function.

Live Event Workflow

The SRT Alliance was established in April 2017. At present, about 170 companies including codec developers such as Ericsson and Harmonic, broadcast service providers, and CDN companies have joined the SRT Alliance and are carrying out activities for widespread applications of the SRT protocol. There are more than 60 products that provide support for the SRT protocol and are actually in operation.

Explorer has also joined the SRT Alliance as a member together with its parent company, PALTEK. In September 2018, Microsoft also joined the Alliance and SRT has been adopted by Office 365 and Azure. From May 2019, Explorer is going to work on projects such as various demonstration tests and international communications jointly with Microsoft Stream & Office 365 video services and Azure & Azure Media Services. Explorer intends to widen the application of new communication technologies such as SRT in collaboration and partnership with other companies in the coming years.
